Morningside Heights

Located between Manhattan’s Upper West Side and Harlem, Morningside Heights is best known for its academic hub.

Stretching from 106th Street and 123rd Street and from Morningside Park to Riverside Park, it is home to a number of colleges and universities, including Columbia University, Barnard College, Manhattan School of Music and Union Theological Seminary. Morningside Heights also contains historic landmarks, such as Riverside Church, Grant’s Tomb and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

Over the years, it has also been home to noteworthy individuals such as Thurgood Marshall, George Gershwin and Dustin Hoffman.

Today, Morningside has a diverse population of approximately 35,000 inhabitants. The area also has a thriving immigrant community. It is currently 57 percent black, 23 percent white, 5 percent Asian, and 21 percent Hispanic.

The diversity is evidenced by the neighborhood’s cultural mosaic of cuisines, including an array of European pastry shops and cafes as well as Japanese, Korean, Indian, Cuban and soul-food restaurants.
